United Plant Savers Goldenseal Sanctuary Tour and Hike

Enjoy a guided hiking tour of the unique and beautiful forest and grassland habitats at United Plant Savers (UpS) Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary in Meigs County which is conserved by AOA with a conservation easement.
Nestled in the unglaciated Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio, the Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary is home to over 500 medicinal plants growing in abundance. Traditional American medicinal herbs, such as American ginseng, goldenseal, blue and black cohosh, and bloodroot, blanket the forest floor in vigorous health.
Enjoy a hike along the magical Medicine Trail led by UpS staff and volunteers. We will view many of the native medicinal species first hand and learn about their habitat and use. We will also get to see the many plants and flowers in the native grassland prairie habitat that cover portions of the preserve site.
United Plant Savers is a nationwide non-profit dedicated to protecting and repopulating at-risk native medicinal plant species in their native habitats. Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary is their flagship property and headquarters – which we are fortunate to have in Ohio. This and other AOA events are free and open to the public. This activity will be held rain or shine – so please come prepared and dress appropriately for the weather and hiking on sloped trails.
Time: Meet at 10:00 a.m. The event will last approximately two hours.
What to Bring: Drinks, snacks and/or lunch of your choice. Preferred insect repellant is recommended during tick season. Sunscreen may be desirable as there will be some sun exposure. Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended for AOA hikes.
Location: Meet at the UpS Goldenseal Sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. We will rendezvous in front of the barn – see Google map link below. Look for the AOA and UpS signs. Goldenseal Sanctuary is located just north of Rutland in Meigs County. Use 35675 Loop Road (County Road 60) Rutland, OH, for the Google map street address for the property.
