BioBlitz at AOA’s New Poston Preserve

Alum Creek Conservation Corridor

Join naturalist experts and non-experts as we get on the land and water to survey and identify the flora and fauna of AOA’s soon to be added Poston Preserve.

AOA is purchasing ~225 acres of the over 400-acre farm site from the Poston family, who want the property to be permanently conserved as a natural area.  Located along Alum Creek and the West Branch of Alum Creek, this spectacular property contains extensive riparian bottomland corridors and steep shale bluffs that line the creeks.  This is the first site conserved by AOA in the upper Alum Creek corridor as part of our watershed and water quality protection efforts in this area.

This BioBlitz event is open to all who have an interest in nature and want to share a day reconnoitering this fabulous property with other likeminded conservationists.  Come prepared to survey by yourself or join with a team led by specialists in their respective fields as we explore the various biomes on the site, including upland woodland, floodplain bottomland forest, fields, creeks, and wetlands.

The BioBlitz is being coordinated by AOA volunteers Amanda Reuter, David Williams, and Tony DiNovo. Dissecting microscopes, hand lenses and site maps will be available for participants on the site.

This event is free and open to the public. We will plan to meet rain or shine – so please come prepared and dress appropriately for the weather and hiking on some slopes.

Time:  Birders should plan to be at the site by 8:00 a.m.  All others by 9:30 a.m.  You are welcome to come, stay and participate in the various surveys for the whole day or any part of the day.  We expect to be complete by 3:00 p.m.

What to Bring:  Lunch, snacks and/or drinks of your choice.  Insect repellant is recommended during tick season.  Binoculars, notebooks, species guides, phones, cameras, et al., as desired to identify and record species found.

Location:  Poston Preserve is located along Alum Creek north of Alum Creek Lake and Kilbourne, on the Morrow – Delaware County line.  We will rendezvous at the old farmstead on Morrow County Road 24. The Google Map address is 151 Worthington-New Haven Road, Ashley.  We will park in the grassed area around the home.
